By now you have probably heard about Arctic® apples, but are probably still wondering what exactly are Arctic® apples? Let me share some important information about Arctic® apples, I learned from visiting their farms, so you can become well informed.
Arctic® apples are basically the same popular varieties you already know and love, with one major advantage: Arctic® apples won’t brown when sliced, bitten or even bruised!
How did the agricultural bioengineer figure out this apple? Neal Carter, an apple and cherry farmer, and his wife saw the need when they realized that apple consumption was declining while obesity rates continued to rise. After much work they figured out a nonbrowning apple could be developed simply by turning off the enzyme that causes apples to brown, while keeping everything else you love about apples – their nutritional value and great taste.
Let’s talk about why Arctic® apples are truly amazing apples you will want to try:
Using less
• Fewer apples wasted, which results in fewer acres needed
• Reduce food loss because it delivers higher quality apples
• More apples make it into stores using the same amount of water and fuel
• Preservative free
Wasting less
• Currently, 40% of apples never get eaten
• Children will eat more apples when sliced and not brown
• Slices stay fresh and tasty
• Eliminate superficial bruising
Getting more
• Arctic® apples maintain the nutritional goodness – browning typically “burns up” antioxidants and vitamin C in conventional apples
• Arctic® apples maintain their fresh apple flavor and crunch
• They bring convenience – the10oz. grab ‘n go bag of fresh cut Arctic® apple slices means they’re ready to eat anywhere
Why people are excited about Arctic® apples?
